PROLOGUE

They were sisters by blood but not by heart.

The screen crackled. The light dimmed.
Alexandra stared blankly at the faded image of her and her sister as distorted clips of old broadcasts played in the background.

“Breaking news – Ashlynn Speed, daughter of Austin and Avery Speed, was reported missing earlier today. She was last seen in...”

What...

“Earlier today, explosions along the east of Coral Lane caught the attention of–”

No...

“The number of high-profile thefts, kidnapped victims and unsettling murders have increased significantly in the past twenty-four hours and is no doubt the work of the infamous Shadows.”

Ashlynn?

“From a small gang of thieves to an empire of crime, the Shadows have grown into a network of intelligence. Which brings us to the question everyone has been asking, who is the mastermind behind these operations?”

What have you done now?

She listened quietly until...

“After a long silence without a single heist or a death, the Shadows have made their comeback tonight...”

“Today’s top story features the return of Ashlynn Speed... seen at last night’s charity gala wearing the same dress as her sister... fell to an unfortunate death...”

“In today’s news... the last we will ever see of the Shadows was at the gala...”

Alexandra threw her head back, shutting her eyes and recalling her sister’s last words before she jumped.
“Mark my words sister, I will be back for what is mine. And you will know when I am.”

Alexandra winced, the image of her sister’s sadistic smile flashing across her mind.

Ashlynn was supposed to be dead.

But even Alexandra knew – the Shadows wouldn’t stay buried forever.
